Chapter Eleven
No one expects flying monkeys. Okay, maybe if you're in the Wizard of Oz, you expect that, but otherwise, no. Just no. I heard screeching as the flying monkeys appeared in the air above us and threw poo at us. Because monkeys.
We had already had our shields up, so we didn't get covered with poo, which was rather fortunate. But with every projectile, it eroded our magic. Poo aside, it could have been anything, really. This was virtual reality, which meant any attack had to be taken seriously.
âThat's just disgusting.â Vetr stood with his arms crossed, staring up as the monkeys threw feces at us. He raised his hand and cold fire shot from it, incinerating three of the monkeys at once.
I called up my Muspelheim magic and shot flames at them. Two of the monkeys caught fire and plummeted in a flaming mess that stunk of burnt feathers and fur. They set off spot fires on the ground.
Callan growled and I saw two monkeys try to outflank us, only they couldn't outflank the shield. Elryn turned to them and charged, swinging the Vorpal blade. The sword caught one of the monkeys and decapitated it before it could do anything else. The other monkey took off.
Suddenly, Ulf disappeared and reappeared outside our shield. He took his giant wolf form and snapped up three monkeys before they could flee. He chased after them, devouring them like dog biscuits. We could only watch in utter amazement at the wolf who would devour the sun at Ragnarok.
âRemind me to never get on his bad side.â Justin watched as Ulf chase the last of the flying monkeys away.
âHow did they find us?â Tuzren turned to me. âDidn't you make sure that we wouldn't be tracked?â
âYeah, I did.â I looked into the sky grimly. âMaybe the Watchers guessed that we'd be going into the Enchanted Forest next.â
Justin shook his head. âMaybe they found Droid. Or maybe you have something tracking you.â
âSpaz normally keeps track of pack members.â Luna snuffed the air. She glanced at me. âI thought you disabled the tracking.â
âI did,â I said. âMaybe they found a way to track us despite that. Spaz is pretty clever.â
âThat would suggest that Spaz is working for them.â Vetr frowned. âThat means he has switch sides.â
âI can't believe that. Spaz wouldn't betray his pack.â Luna shook her head.
I wasn't so sure about that. Even though I counted Spaz as a friend, I knew he wasn't necessarily a good guy. He had been made into a werewolf when a rival faction within the Denver Wolfpack kidnapped him and bit the hell out of him. Over the months I had known him, I was well aware he could fry hackersâ brains without remorse. He could hack into anyoneâs mainframe and steal cash. Hel, he was wanted by the FBI and Interpol. Turning him in would net someone several million.
And yet, he always stayed a step ahead of the law. Spaz only consorted with me because he knew I wasnât crazy enough to take him on.
